✦ Why Visage Theory exists

Skincare is graded by marketing. We grade it by evidence.

Walk down any skincare aisle and the loudest claim wins — "clinically proven," "dermatologist-developed," a hero ingredient in giant type on the front of the bottle. None of it tells you the one thing that matters: is the active actually dosed high enough to work? Visage Theory answers that question, the same way for every product, and shows you the receipts. No opinions, no sponsorships — just published studies, the named active, and the dose it's used at.

Who's behind it

Independent, on purpose

A small, independent team — no brand money, and a grade you can check yourself.

A small, independent team

No brand affiliations

Visage Theory started the way most skepticism does: money spent on serums that promised everything and changed nothing. Reading the actual ingredient lists and the studies behind the hero ingredients made the pattern hard to unsee — the active is right there on the label, but the dose is often a fraction of what the research says it needs to work.

There was no neutral place to check. Reviews are vibes, brand pages are sales copy, and "clinically proven" can mean almost anything. So we built the neutral place: an open rubric that compares every product's disclosed dose against the published effective threshold, the same way, every time.

We take no brand sponsorships and no paid placements, and a grade can't be bought — pass and fail cost the same, and the engine never sees who's paying. We don't ask you to take our word for any of it: the rubric is public and reproducible, so you can re-run it yourself and get the same letter.

The goal is simple: make the dollar you spend on skincare buy efficacy instead of marketing.

Independence

What we stand for

Four commitments that make the grade worth trusting. They don't bend for anyone.

🧾

Every grade traces to the receipts

A grade is never a vibe or an opinion. It traces back to published studies, the named active, and the dose it's used at. If you can't see why a product earned its letter, it isn't a Visage grade.

🚫

You can't pay to move a grade

Pass and fail cost the same, and the engine never sees who's paying. A brand can buy an audit or license a seal — but that buys a true result, like a lab test, not a better one. The letter is computed from the open rubric.

🤝

No sponsorship influences a grade

We take no money to feature, rank, or soften a product. Newsletters and breakdowns are sponsor-free. If a relationship exists, it's disclosed on the page — and it still never touches the grade.

🤐

We withhold rather than guess

When a brand hides its dose, we can't confirm the active reaches an effective level — so we say so instead of giving the benefit of the doubt. An honest "we can't verify this" beats a flattering guess.

A grade you can reproduce is the only kind worth trusting

The rubric and the active thresholds are public. Anyone can take a product's ingredient list, run it through the same engine, and arrive at the same letter we did. That's the whole point: independence isn't a promise we ask you to believe — it's something you can check yourself. Read the full methodology →

No hidden agenda

How we make money — transparently

An independent grader still has to keep the lights on. Here's exactly how, and why none of it touches a letter.

Affiliate links

Disclosed affiliate links

When you buy through a product link, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We earn the same whether a product passes or fails, so there's no incentive to inflate a grade — and links are disclosed as affiliate.

Pro tier

A Pro subscription

The core grade is free. Pro unlocks the deeper tools — the dupe finder, the daily skincare OS, and full grade history. You're paying for the software, never for a better grade.

B2B licensing

'Verified' seal licensing

Brands that already meet the bar can license the Visage Verified seal to show it. The audit produces a true result, never a guaranteed one — a brand pays for the test, not the outcome.

The grade itself is independent of anything Visage sells

Affiliate commissions, Pro subscriptions, and seal licenses fund the work — they do not move a letter. The grade is computed from the open, public rubric before any money is involved, and a brand can pay for an audit or a seal only to learn or display a result it has genuinely earned.
